Nice story, Stewart. One point of clarification: Fujita was not the Grand Marshal of the 1962 Azalea Festival. His visit that year was very controversial and had the town of Brookings divided, if not turned upside down. Fujita didn't even ride in the traditional parade out of fears for his safety, but he did watch it from the side of the road in downtown Brookings. It was at a banquet in his honor later that weekend during which he presented his family sword.

Fujita's mission was a very expensive one for the results obtained, especially compared to the potential of the FUGO intercontinental bomber balloons. At $190 each, they cost far more to shoot downmaking them verhy cost effective. If they had used even slightly better quality control on the timer fuses they would have been very succesful.

You should have a FUGO on display. (I nade my solo flight in one in 1947.)
